Looking ahead to its 100th anniversary and the beginning of its second century of operations in 2022, the Barnes Foundation is publicly launching a $100 million capital campaign to enhance educational programs and community engagement initiatives, support operations, and strengthen the endowment. The Second Century Campaign has reached more than one third of its $100 million goal with over $35 million raised to date.

The Board of Trustees of the Barnes Foundation today announced that John H. McFadden, Esq., and Christine Poggi, PhD, have been elected to the Board of Trustees.

For its second survey of photography, the Barnes Foundation is presenting nearly 250 early photographs—most of which have never been exhibited before—created by British and French photographers between the 1840s and 1880s. Curated by Thom Collins, executive director and president of the Barnes, From Today, Painting Is Dead: Early Photography in Britain and France is drawn from the private collection of Michael Mattis and Judy Hochberg and spans the invention of the daguerreotype to photography on paper and beyond. The show is on view in the Barnes’s Roberts Gallery from February 24 through May 12, 2019.

To welcome more visitors during the holiday season, the Barnes Foundation has announced special extended hours of 10 am–8 pm on Friday, November 23, and Saturday, November 24, and from Wednesday, December 26, through Sunday, December 30. The Barnes will also be open from 11 am to 5 pm on New Year’s Day, Tuesday, January 1, 2019.

As part of its multifaceted community engagement efforts in the city of Philadelphia, the Barnes has announced two initiatives offering enrichment through the arts in local communities: The Barnes @ LoLa 38, a collaboration with the People's Emergency Center Community Development Corporation (PECCDC) on arts programming taking place in West Philadelphia and at the Barnes; and Bridges to the Arts, a collaboration with Puentes de Salud on an art-based biliteracy program for pre-K youth and their families from South Philadelphia's Latino immigrant community.

The educational partnership between the University and the Barnes Foundation expands opportunities for both students and the surrounding community to engage in the horticulture education program, life sciences offerings, and fine arts programming.

On the occasion of its major fall exhibition, Berthe Morisot: Woman Impressionist, the Barnes Foundation will present Fashion and Feminism: A Symposium Inspired by Berthe Morisot on Saturday, October 20.

An installation of new paintings by American artist Pat Steir (b. 1940), will be on view at the Barnes Foundation from January 12 through November 17, 2019.

For this summer’s The Oval+—an initiative of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation in partnership with Fairmount Park Conservancy—the Barnes Foundation presents an interactive outdoor installation, the Canopy at the Barnes, designed by SHIFTSPACE.

The Barnes Foundation and Mural Arts Philadelphia have announced the four artists selected to participate in three-month residencies at the Mural Arts Studio at the Barnes as part of Let's Connect, a new participatory project engaging Philadelphia’s art community.
