About the Class

The great Netherlandish artists Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel marked the shift from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, and their works still hold fascination for contemporary viewers. This class will devote two sessions to each artist, showing Bosch’s influence on Bruegel and examining the significant contributions that the beloved later artist, known for his depictions of peasants and landscapes, made to the future of art.

Instructor

Larry Silver

Silver is the James & Nan Wagner Farquhar Professor Emeritus of History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. A specialist in old master paintings, he has written about artists such as Bosch, Bruegel, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Dürer and organized several exhibitions of old master prints. He previously taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and Northwestern University.
