About the Class
Today, we take it for granted that artists can depict anything they want, in whatever colors they want. But to paint real-world things in “unnatural” colors—for instance, a green sky or blue grass—was an artistic liberty regained only about 150 years ago after centuries of repression. This course looks at the various ways in which color was redefined between 1860 and 1914, from Manet to Matisse, with a particular emphasis on color as touch, system, symbol, and drawing in the works of artists such as Pissarro, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Seurat.

Paul Galvez
Galvez is research associate at the Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History at the University of Texas at Dallas. His book Courbet’s Landscapes: The Origins of Modern Painting (Yale University Press) is the first book-length study of Gustave Courbet’s work in the genre. A scholar of modern art from the 19th century to the present, Galvez was guest curator of Object Lessons: Jay DeFeo Works on Paper from the 1970s (Galerie Frank Elbaz, Dallas in 2018) and has recently written on Cézanne and James Ensor for Artforum.
