About the Class
The Byzantine Empire, with its capital in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), was one of the wealthiest and most powerful institutions in history. For more than a thousand years, from 330 to 1453, the Byzantines were known for their glittering mosaics, golden icons, and gem-covered religious relics. Through a combination of lecture and class discussion, we will explore the art of Byzantium and discover how its builders, goldsmiths, and painters became the most sought-after experts of their time at creating a vision of heaven on earth.

Instructor
Kaelin Jewell
Jewell is a senior instructor in adult education at the Barnes and has been teaching art history for nearly 15 years. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in photography and art history from the University of Louisville’s Hite Institute of Art and Design and earned her PhD in ancient and medieval art history from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. In addition to her work at the Barnes, Jewell is trained as an archaeologist and has worked on archaeological projects in the American Midwest and on the island of Sicily.
