The Modernists of Montparnasse: The Barnes and Beyond

About the Class

This lively course takes us into the vibrant community that flourished in Montparnasse, a key center of artistic production in Paris during the early 20th century. Examining works from the Barnes collection, we will explore the circle of comrades and competitors—including Picasso, Modigliani, De Chirico, and Matisse—who shaped this dynamic creative hub, contributing to the development of cubism, surrealism, and other modernist movements. We will also consider the roles of influential dealers like Paul Guillaume and prominent collectors such as Dr. Albert Barnes. Each week will provide opportunities for shared discovery and discussion, encouraging us to rethink established narratives and gain new insights into this pivotal moment in art history.
