The Barnes Foundation & People's Emergency Center Announce Artists Selected for Everyday Places Artist Partnerships
The Barnes Foundation and People’s Emergency Center Community Development Corporation (PECCDC), through their collaborative initiative Barnes West, have announced five West Philadelphia-based social-impact artists who have been selected to participate in Everyday Places Artist Partnerships: Keyonna Butler, Marshall James Kavanaugh, Jahwula Seapoe, Karen Smith, and Andrea Walls.
The Barnes Foundation Announces Barnes on the Block with Mural Arts Philadelphia & Wawa Welcome America’s Our America Now
The Barnes Foundation announces the fourth Barnes on the Block with Mural Arts Philadelphia, taking place together with Wawa Welcome America—Philadelphia’s annual July 4th festival—and its inaugural Our America Now event, on Friday, July 2, 6 – 10pm.
This fall, the Barnes Foundation will present Suzanne Valadon: Model, Painter, Rebel, the first exhibition dedicated to the French artist and model Suzanne Valadon at a major US arts institution. The first self-taught woman to exhibit at the Salon de la Sociéte Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Valadon challenged behavioral codes with her art and lifestyle, breaking new ground with her unapologetic portraits and nudes. On view in the Barnes’s Roberts Gallery from September 26, 2021, through January 9, 2022, this exhibition considers Valadon’s rich contribution to the early 20th-century art world and features representative works from all stages of her career.
Six Philadelphia Cultural Institutions Honor Hospital Workers with Free Admission Days
In honor of National Hospital Week, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the Barnes Foundation, Eastern State Penitentiary, the Franklin Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art jointly announce Free Admission Days for Hospital Workers.
The Board of Trustees of the Barnes Foundation announced that Aileen Roberts has been elected as the Board’s new Chair. Roberts, who has served on the Board since 2005 and as Vice Chair since 2015, succeeds Joseph Neubauer. Neubauer led the Barnes as Chair from 2015 to 2020 and will remain a Trustee and serve as Chair of the Barnes Foundation’s $100 million Second Century Campaign.
Barnes Foundation Expands Education Offerings Through Online Classes
The Barnes Foundation announced today the continuation of its online classes, which launched in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 health crisis and related temporary building closures. The Barnes’s online art history classes have enabled an expansion of the institution’s educational mission, which was especially crucial during 2020, a year when the Barnes was closed for 25 weeks and in-gallery instruction was paused.
The Barnes Foundation to Reopen on January 8 “Elijah Pierce’s America” Exhibition Extended
The Barnes Foundation has announced it will reopen to the public on Friday, January 8, 2021, following the recent temporary closure mandated by state and city officials to limit the spread of COVID-19, in effect since November 20, 2020. The exhibition Elijah Pierce’s America, originally slated to close on January 10, 2021, has been extended through January 18. Extended hours on select days will provide additional opportunities for visitors to experience the exhibition before it closes. Comprehensive health and safety precautions continue, ensuring the well-being of staff and visitors.
Following the recent temporary closures mandated by state and city officials to limit the spread of COVID-19, in effect since November 20, 2020, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the Barnes Foundation, The Franklin Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art have jointly announced plans to reopen in January with continued health and safety measures in place for staff and visitors. Eastern State Penitentiary plans to reopen in March and the Rodin Museum will reopen later in the spring.
In March 2021, the Barnes will present the world premiere of Soutine / de Kooning: Conversations in Paint, exploring the affinities between the work of Lithuanian artist Chaïm Soutine and Dutch-American abstract expressionist Willem de Kooning. On view in the Barnes’s Roberts Gallery from March 7 through August 8, 2021, this presentation considers how Soutine’s paintings, with their built-up surfaces and energetic brushwork, served the art of de Kooning and helped shape his groundbreaking abstract figurative works in the late 1940s and beyond.
The Barnes Foundation Announces Virtual Programming & Holiday Shopping Opportunities During Temporary Closure
The Barnes Foundation has announced a variety of virtual programs for art lovers of all ages and holiday shopping opportunities during its temporary closure per Philadelphia’s “Safer at Home” restrictions designed to limit the spread of COVID-19. Currently, the Barnes plans to reopen on Saturday, January 2, 2021.
