About the Event

In celebration of Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, we’re proud to present entrəpē, an immersive evening of visual art, music, and performance.

Using imagery from her impressive body of work, along with film and archival footage, visual artist Mickalene Thomas will deliver an improvised VJ set that responds to a sonic landscape crafted by a live band led by Grammy Award–winning jazz musician Terri Lyne Carrington. An undeniably queer, futuristic, and fluid experience, entrəpē reunites the longtime artistic collaborators for a provocative performance fueled by Black feminist theory.

Thomas will also provide a first public look at her designs for two new mural projects with Mural Arts Philadelphia. Honoring the legacies of influential Black and Brown women in the arts and civil rights, the murals will be installed in Philadelphia and Camden, NJ, Thomas’s hometown.

The performance starts at 7:30pm and lasts about 60 minutes; a conversation with the artists will follow.

Presented in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia. This event includes access to the collection and Mickalene Thomas: All About Love.

Seating is limited. Wine, cocktails, and beer are available for purchase before and after the performance.

About the Artists

Mickalene Thomas is one of today’s most influential artists. Her innovative practice has yielded instantly recognizable and widely celebrated aesthetic languages within contemporary visual culture. Thomas completed her MFA at the Yale University School of Art in 2002 and a residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2003 and soon became known for her large-scale acrylic paintings of Black women in states of leisure and repose. Her confident and assured subjects are often depicted in domestic interiors from Black America, claiming the agency of womanhood while deconstructing the art historical canon. She lives and works in New York.

Terri Lyne Carrington is a Grammy Award–winning drummer, composer, and educator. She is an NEA Jazz Master and a Doris Duke Artist and has performed with luminaries including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Cassandra Wilson, and Esperanza Spalding. Her latest release, New Standards Vol. 1, won the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. She is the founder and artistic director of Berklee College of Music’s Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.
