About the Installation

We’re proud to present Let Me Freeze Again to Death (2020), an immersive film and sound installation by composer Missy Mazzoli, ahead of the premiere of her new opera, The Listeners, at the Academy of Music on September 25. Mazzoli made Let Me Freeze Again to Death at the height of the Covid-19 lockdown with filmmaker Adam Larsen and countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, now the general director and president of Opera Philadelphia. The three artists worked in physical isolation from each other, at a time when confinement was the global culture. Let Me Freeze Again to Death is a sensory experience that is at once solitary and communal—ideas that Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek further explore in The Listeners. Runtime: 4:09 min.

Free with admission. On view on the lower level Thursday, September 19 – Sunday, September 22.

Let Me Freeze Again to Death was commissioned by Works & Process and premiered July 12, 2020. The installation at the Barnes is presented in partnership with Opera Philadelphia.
