About the Talk

Rob Jagiela: “Bertrand v. Barnes: Bertrand Russell and the Barnes Foundation, 1923–45”

Nobel Prize–winning philosopher Bertrand Russell was one of the most vocal and visible public intellectuals of the 20th century. Naturally, his work and the controversy it courted caught the interest of Albert C. Barnes, an outspoken and controversial figure in his own right.

In this talk, Barnes assistant archivist Rob Jagiela offers an in-depth look at Russell’s association with Dr. Barnes and the foundation. Learn about Russell’s time as an instructor at the foundation and the deterioration of his relationship with Dr. Barnes, which culminated in a legal battle that the collector tried to bring to the US Supreme Court. This talk is a companion to the new online archival exhibition.

Registrants will be emailed a link for the talk the day prior.
