About the Tour

Each month, Spotlight Tours focus on a different artist or theme, allowing for a deeper dive into specific areas of the collection.

Henri Rousseau became a full-time artist at the age of 49, after retiring from his post at the Paris customs office—a job that prompted his famous nickname, Le Douanier (“the toll collector”). The self-taught Rousseau is known for his sumptuously colored compositions of exotic creatures in luscious settings. Whether portraits or landscapes, his paintings are filled with detailed plant life worked with painstaking precision. His fabulous foliage was sometimes inspired by visits to botanical gardens, but often the flowers and plants are pure invention.

Includes access to the collection and Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations (opening March 9) before and after the tour.
