About the Tour

Each month, Spotlight Tours focus on a different artist or theme, allowing for a deeper dive into specific areas of the collection.

In this tour, we’ll explore the simple, bucolic pleasures of Arcadia, a mythical realm where humankind lives in harmony with nature. Arcadia is an idea firmly rooted in the classical tradition. In Greek mythology, it was a land of sensual delight home to shepherds and herdsmen who excelled in singing. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, a time of sweeping industrialization and urbanization, this dream found new currency in the imagination of modern artists who yearned for a return to nature. Look closely at works by Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, and other painters inspired by Arcadian ideals.

Includes access to the collection before and after the tour.
